After a hair transplant, transplanted hairs often shed in the first weeks. New growth usually begins around month three, looks clearer by months six to nine, and matures at about twelve months. Individual timing varies with graft numbers, area treated and aftercare.

Month 1

Healing and early shed

Surface healing finishes. Redness fades. Many transplanted shafts shed while follicles rest under the skin.

Scabs should be gone if aftercare was followed.
The area can look similar to (or thinner than) before for a short period. This is temporary.
Keep protecting the scalp from strong sun.
Stay in touch with the clinic if healing seems delayed or painful.

Months 2 to 3

Quiet phase, then first growth

Month two is often quiet. From around month three, fine new hairs begin to appear.

Early hairs can be thin or lighter. That is normal.
Do not judge density yet. Coverage builds for months after this.
Maintain any medical therapy your surgeon recommended (for example topical or oral plans for native hair).
Good time for a progress photo set under consistent lighting.

Months 4 to 6

Visible improvement

Growth thickens and the hairline or treated zone starts to read more clearly in photos and the mirror.

Texture and calibre continue to improve.
Some patches grow faster than others. Unevenness early on is common.
Styling options increase as length returns.
Mid-journey review with the clinic can reassure and fine-tune aftercare.

Months 7 to 9

Density builds

Most patients see a clear step-up in fullness. Social confidence often rises here.

Hair shafts thicken further toward mature character.
Crown and larger sessions may still be catching up optically.
Compare like-for-like photos (same angle, light, hair length).
Discuss any remaining native thinning so the overall frame stays balanced.

Months 10 to 12

Mature result

By about one year, results are typically mature enough for a final assessment. Some crown cases keep refining toward 18 months.

Book a results review if one is offered.
Decide on any further sessions only after donor and goals are reassessed.
Continue long-term hair health habits recommended by your surgeon.
